What is Fake App?

Reviewed 2026-06-25

Definition: A fake app imitates a real wallet, exchange, or DeFi protocol to steal your login credentials or seed phrase on first launch. It may appear in app stores, Telegram groups, or third-party download sites. Only install crypto apps from the official website of the project you trust.

How it works

Fake apps are listed under near-identical names in app stores, shared as APK download links in Telegram groups and Discord servers, or promoted through search ads pointing to lookalike download pages. On first launch, the app may ask for your seed phrase — claiming it is needed for 'import' or 'restoration' — then sends it to the attacker's server. Some variants mimic the real app exactly and work normally while capturing keys in the background.

How to protect yourself

Install wallet and exchange apps only from the official project website, accessed via a bookmark or a direct URL you typed yourself. On mobile stores, verify the publisher name and check review dates — fake apps often have recent five-star reviews from fake accounts. Never install a crypto app from a link sent in a DM, chat group, or ad.

Frequently asked questions

How do I verify a crypto app is genuine?

Find the official download link on the project's official website — reached by typing the URL yourself or using a trusted bookmark. Verify the publisher name in the app store matches the official company name exactly.

What if I already installed a fake app and entered my seed phrase?

Assume your wallet is compromised. Create a new wallet with a fresh seed phrase on a clean device and move all funds immediately — before the attacker does. Delete the fake app.

Are fake apps only on Android?

No. Fake apps have appeared on both iOS and Android, in official app stores and through third-party APK links. The iOS App Store is harder to fake in, but not impossible — always verify the publisher.
