What is Seed Phrase?
Reviewed 2026-06-25
Definition: A seed phrase is the master backup of a crypto wallet — typically 12 or 24 words that can restore any wallet derived from it. Anyone who sees a seed phrase controls the funds permanently. It must never be typed into a website, shared with support, or stored digitally in plain text.
How it works
Seed phrases are generated from a standard wordlist (BIP-39) and encode a master private key. Any wallet derived from that phrase — on any device, any app — can be recreated by anyone who holds it. Attackers target seed phrases through fake wallet apps that capture input, fake support agents who ask for it, phishing sites disguised as wallet recovery tools, and clipboard hijackers that read copied text. Because a seed phrase bypasses all other security — passwords, 2FA, device locks — losing it means losing everything permanently.
How to protect yourself
Write your seed phrase on paper and store it in a secure physical location. Never type it into any website or app that is not your wallet's own official recovery flow on a fresh install. No legitimate support agent, admin, or protocol will ever ask for it. If you suspect your phrase has been seen, create a new wallet with a new phrase and transfer funds immediately.
Frequently asked questions
What should I do if I accidentally entered my seed phrase on a website?
Assume the wallet is compromised. Create a new wallet with a fresh seed phrase immediately and transfer any remaining funds before the attacker does. Do not reuse the old wallet.
Is it safe to store a seed phrase in a password manager?
A password manager is better than a plain text file, but it is still a digital copy subject to account compromise and device access. The safest storage for a seed phrase is a physical copy in a secure location — not in any app.
Does a hardware wallet protect my seed phrase?
A hardware wallet keeps the private key off your internet-connected device, which protects against remote attacks. But the seed phrase that backs up the hardware wallet has the same risk if it is exposed — physical security of the written phrase still matters.
